Congratulations yet again to the fabulous and dedicated team at Primage  Assisted Gentle Exercise Studio in Wagga Wagga. The facility is a credit to Charlene and husband Paul, their vision for helping those with special needs as well as abled bodied clients is also a credit to their insight into the future of their business. Charlene heads the team who won Outstanding Health & Fitness for ACT & South West NSW REgional Local business award. This is the second year in a row that Awards have had their name on, we wish them well for the State & National Awards in September, both of these are held at Star City, so a glitz and glamour night to be had by all. The Centre was founded by Bolton Businessman Derek Gaskell MBE after his wife had undergone life saving surgery and then came home but could not walk or talk and suffered deep depression. Derek set about creating and establishment to cater for people in similar circumstances. Wendy Edge, Director, says "After injury and physiotherapy at hospital wher do people go next? So many of our clients either physically couldn't or don't want to go to a gym. We provide a safe, friendly and effective alternative."

“Patience with chronic pain, unfortunately, prefer not to exercise. It hurts too much. In fact, it is not uncommon to hear these patients complain that physical therapy makes them worse! Deconditioning and progressive weakness contribute to the chronic problems of the most unfortunate patients. We all would like to have some gentle, progressive toning up of muscle. Someone has called this a ‘kinder, gentler’ type of exercise. In fact, this kind of exercise is now possible in the new equipment ‘Assisted Exercise’ marketed by Shapemaster. These new machines are capable of slowing the rate of muscle contraction to a more comfortable slower pace. The principles of muscle toning dictate that the muscle be allowed to maintain isometric or isotonic contraction for several seconds to obtain maximum benefit on strength and, as a side benefit, calorie expenditure and weight loss. Some of the Shapemaster equipment can also be used for aerobic purposes, and thus to foster the production of endorphins sorely needed for chronic fatigue and pain. In general ‘Assisted Exercise’ can contribute to the sense of well-being and help to overcome the depression that afflicts some patients. Some types of exercise, with the Shapemaster systems, can be modified as well to include stretching of myofascial bands of muscles (i.e. painful chronic spasm). Patients with new prosthetic knees or hips can ‘graduate’ from their C.P.M. (Constant Passive Motion) machines to these to continue, not only mobilization, but beyond this, strengthening of the affected limb”.

Respectfully submitted,

Pedro A Gismondi, M.D.
